What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact Toluca Mammillaria pictured, a 3.5 inch head with three pups, shipped rooted and bare root without soil or a pot. After arrival: unbox with thick gloves, the spines are sharp. Let the plant rest in a shaded, dry spot for 2-3 days, then plant in a sandy, fast-draining mix or a gravelly full-sun spot. Wait about a week before the first watering so the roots can settle, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Some scuffing of spines in transit is normal and does not harm the plant.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

This is the exact plant you will receive. A one of a kind Mammillaria polythele 'Toluca', a 3.5 inch main head with three pups already growing at its base, photographed in bloom with magenta flowers opening out of a crown packed with white wool.

Toluca is the nearly spineless form of Mammillaria polythele, so what you see is the plant itself: rows of plump green tubercles spiraling up the body with only a few wispy hairs between them. It is the same look as last week's two head Toluca that sold within the hour, in a younger plant that is already making a family. Honest note: a few dry flower husks from earlier in the season are still tucked between the tubercles, as you can see in the photos. They are harmless and fall away on their own.

Pictured in its 4 inch nursery pot for scale. It ships rooted and bare root, wrapped and padded, without soil or the pot.

If your area drops below 40°F during the colder months, we highly recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as we don’t automatically include one. This helps keep your plants safe in transit. 🌡️❄️

Cactus Care

Toluca Mammillaria is a forgiving windowsill cactus. Bright light, a gritty mix, and a dry winter rest bring the flowers back every year.

  • Light: Full sun to bright light. A south or west window indoors. Outside, give it a little afternoon shade in very hot summers.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Water deeply, then let the mix dry completely before watering again. Keep it nearly dry from late fall to early spring; the winter rest is what sets the flowers.
  • Soil: Gritty, fast-draining cactus mix in a pot with a drainage hole.
  • Temperature: Protect below about 30 F. Outside USDA zones 9b to 11 grow it in a pot and bring it in for winter.
  • Feeding: A diluted cactus fertilizer once or twice in spring and summer.
