What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact Trichocereus hybrid clump pictured, freshly dug, shipped rooted and bare root without soil or a pot. After arrival: unbox with thick gloves, the spines are sharp. Let the plant rest in a shaded, dry spot for 2-3 days, then plant in a sandy, fast-draining mix or a gravelly full-sun spot. Wait about a week before the first watering so the roots can settle, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Some scuffing of spines in transit is normal and does not harm the plant.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

This is the exact plant you will receive. A one of a kind Trichocereus hybrid (Echinopsis hybrid) growing as a dense clump of about 15 heads, roughly 16 inches tall and 16 inches wide. Eight upright columns rise from a ring of rounded pups, every one covered in fine white bristle spines with a golden wool cap at the crown. The whole clump reads silver in the sun.

This is a torch cactus hybrid from the huascha side of the family, and it flowers yellow: big funnel blooms in late spring and summer, several open at once on a clump this size. It grows fast for a cactus and keeps pupping, so the clump only gets fuller.

Field dug and shipped rooted as one clump. Plant it in fast-draining mix in full sun, hold water for about a week, then soak and dry.

Trichocereus hybrids are the easy, showy torch cacti. Sun, drainage and a dry winter rest are all it takes to get the yellow flowers.

  • Light: Full sun. In the hottest desert climates a little afternoon shade keeps the stems from bleaching.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Water deeply in the growing season, then let the soil dry completely. Nearly dry in winter; the winter rest sets the flower buds.
  • Soil: Fast-draining cactus mix or a gravelly landscape bed.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11. Tolerates a light frost when dry; protect below about 25 F.
  • Feeding: A diluted cactus fertilizer monthly in spring and summer encourages more flowers.
