What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact Ferocactus herrerae pictured, shipped rooted and bare root without soil or a pot. After arrival: unbox with thick gloves, the spines are sharp. Let the plant rest in a shaded, dry spot for 2-3 days, then plant in a sandy, fast-draining mix or a gravelly full-sun spot. Wait about a week before the first watering so the roots can settle, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Some scuffing of spines in transit is normal and does not harm the plant.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

This is the exact plant you will receive. A one of a kind Ferocactus wislizeni subsp. herrerae, the Twisted Barrel cactus, the Mexican form of the fishhook barrel, about 8 inches across. The ribs carry heavy, ridged, red-flushed central spines that hook and twist at the tip, woven through with long white bristle radials. The crown is a knot of deep red new spines.

Native to Sonora and Sinaloa in northwest Mexico, this is the showiest fishhook barrel for spine color, longer and more twisted in the spine than the Arizona form, and the spines glow when backlit. Mature plants ring the crown with yellow to orange flowers in summer and hold yellow fruit into winter.

Full sun, sharp drainage, water only when fully dry. Slow, tough and long lived.

  • Light: Full sun
  • Water: Low. Soak and dry, nearly none in winter
  • Hardiness: USDA zones 9 to 11, protect below about 20 F
  • Growth: Slow, a solitary barrel to columnar barrel with age

Please note: This is a rooted, bare-root plant shipped without soil or a pot. You will receive the exact plant pictured.

Cold Weather Warning

If your area drops below 40°F during the colder months, we highly recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as we don’t automatically include one. This helps keep your plants safe in transit. 🌡️❄️

Cactus Care

Ferocactus herrerae is a desert barrel from northwest Mexico. Give it the sun and the dry spells it gets at home and it will thrive for decades.

  • Light: Full sun. Strong light keeps the spines red and the body tight.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Water deeply in the warm months only when the soil is bone dry. Nearly none from late fall to early spring.
  • Soil: Gritty, fast-draining cactus mix or a gravelly, well-drained landscape bed. Rot is the only real risk.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11. Tolerates brief dips to about 20 F when dry; protect from wet cold.
  • Feeding: A diluted cactus fertilizer once or twice in spring and summer is plenty.
