What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact two head Mammillaria pictured, shipped rooted and bare root without soil or a pot. After arrival: unbox with thick gloves, the spines are sharp. Let the plant rest in a shaded, dry spot for 2-3 days, then plant in a sandy, fast-draining mix or a gravelly full-sun spot. Wait about a week before the first watering so the roots can settle, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Some scuffing of spines in transit is normal and does not harm the plant.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

This is the exact plant you will receive. A one of a kind two head Mammillaria polythele 'Toluca' clump, 6.5 inches across and 4.5 inches tall, photographed in bloom with a ring of bright magenta flowers around a crown packed with white wool.

Honest note: the lower part of one head has tan, corky scarring near the soil line, and there are two small pale healed marks on the other head. Both are old and dry. They are on the lower sides, and we priced it with them in mind. Toluca is a nearly spineless form of Mammillaria polythele, grown for its white wool and that crown of flowers.

Flowers come and go. It may or may not still be in bloom when it reaches you, and Mammillaria rings like this usually come back every year. Pictured in its nursery pot for scale; it ships rooted and bare root without soil or the pot.

Mammillaria are some of the easiest cacti to keep. Bright light, a gritty mix and a dry, cool winter bring the flower ring back each year.

  • Light: Full sun to bright light. A sunny windowsill or a spot outside with morning sun works well.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Water deeply, then let the mix dry completely. Keep it nearly dry in winter, which also helps it set flowers.
  • Soil: Gritty, fast-draining cactus mix in a pot with a drainage hole.
  • Temperature: Hardy outdoors in USDA zones 9 to 11 when kept dry. Protect below about 30 F.
  • Feeding: A diluted cactus fertilizer once or twice in spring and summer.
