What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact Thimble Cactus mound pictured, shipped rooted and bare root without soil or a pot. Important: this plant is made of many loosely attached heads, and some or many are likely to separate in transit. This is normal and not damage. Every loose head is a plant. Set the whole mound and any loose heads on top of dry, gritty, fast-draining cactus mix and do not bury them deep. Wait about a week before the first light watering, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Grouped together in a wide shallow pot, the heads root and knit back into a cushion over time.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

This is the exact plant you will receive. A one of a kind established Mammillaria gracilis (Thimble Cactus) mound, a dense cushion of dozens of little white-spined heads built up over years. Each tiny head looks like a frosted thimble, and together they form the tight, rounded mat you see in the photos.

Please read before you buy. This is a naturally clumping cactus whose small heads attach loosely, and we are digging and shipping it bare root as a full mound for the first time. It is very likely that some or many of the heads will separate in transit. That is completely normal and not damage. Every loose head is a ready-to-go plant: simply set it on top of dry, gritty mix, and it will root and grow into its own mound over time. You may receive one connected mound, or a mound plus a handful of loose heads, or mostly loose heads. Either way you are getting the whole plant pictured, and more heads means more plants.

  • Light: Bright light to partial sun
  • Water: Low. Soak and dry
  • Hardiness: USDA zones 9 to 11
  • Growth: Clumping, forms low mounds

Please note: This is a rooted, bare-root plant shipped without soil or a pot. You will receive the exact plant pictured, though some heads may arrive detached as described above.

Cold Weather Warning

If your area drops below 40°F during the colder months, we highly recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as we don’t automatically include one. This helps keep your plants safe in transit. 🌡️❄️

Cactus Care

The Thimble Cactus is easy and forgiving. Bright light and careful watering keep the mound tight and healthy.

  • Replanting loose heads: Set any detached heads on top of dry, gritty mix and leave them. They root on their own within a couple of weeks. No need to bury them deep.
  • Light: Bright light to partial sun. It can burn in intense all-day desert sun, so give it a little afternoon shade in the hottest climates.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Let the soil dry fully between waterings and keep it nearly dry in winter.
  • Soil: Gritty, fast-draining cactus mix.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9-11. Protect from frost or grow it indoors in colder areas.
