Miniature Barrel Cactus (Thelocactus setispinus)

A small barrel cactus that actually flowers, and flowers young. Also sold as the Strawberry Cactus, it opens silky yellow blooms with a deep red center in summer, even on small plants. It stays compact, takes cold better than most cacti, and arrives as an established, rooted plant.

Growth Habit: Solitary barrel, wavy ribs Mature Size: 8 to 12 in tall Light: Bright, direct sun Water: Low Hardiness: Zones 9 to 11 (to about 20 F) Pet Safe: Non-toxic, sharp spines Bloom: Yellow with a red throat
What you'll receive:

One rooted Thelocactus setispinus, 5 to 7 inches, shipped bare-root (no pot or soil) so it travels safely and settles in fast. At this size it is a mature, blooming-age plant. Minor scars or spine variation are normal.

Who it's for

Anyone who wants a small cactus that actually flowers, has a bright sunny windowsill or grow light, gardens outdoors in zones 9 to 11, likes collector barrel cactus in a compact size, or wants a low-water gift.

Who it's not for

Low-light rooms (weak light means no blooms and soft, stretched growth), schedule-waterers (it rots fast in damp soil or humidity), cold-climate outdoor growers in zone 8 or colder, and anyone wanting a big statement plant, this one stays small on purpose. The hooked spines are very sharp, so keep it away from curious hands and pets.

Miniature Barrel Cactus Care

After arrival. Let it rest in a bright, dry spot for 2 to 3 days before potting. Hold off on water that first week.

Light. Give it your sunniest window or full sun outdoors. Strong light is what triggers the flowers. Move it into direct sun gradually so it does not scorch.

Water. Soak, then wait. Water only when the soil is bone dry, about every 2 to 3 weeks in summer and far less in winter. This species rots easily, so never let it sit wet or in high humidity.

Soil and pots. Use a gritty, sharply draining cactus mix in a pot with a drainage hole, just slightly wider than the plant.

Temperature. Happiest 60 to 85 F. Tolerates brief cold to about 20 F. Protect from hard frost.
