What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact Euphorbia anoplia cluster pictured, shipped rooted and bare root without soil or a pot. After arrival: unbox with thick gloves, the spines are sharp. Let the plant rest in a shaded, dry spot for 2-3 days, then plant in a sandy, fast-draining mix or a gravelly full-sun spot. Wait about a week before the first watering so the roots can settle, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Some scuffing of spines in transit is normal and does not harm the plant.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

This is the exact plant you will receive. A one of a kind Euphorbia anoplia (Euphorbia polygona var. anoplia), the Tanzanian Zipper Plant, grown into a cluster about 4 inches across with one taller center stem and small new pups at the base.

The stems are deep green with faint pale bands and rows of tiny red brown points along each rib, which give it the zipper look. It is not a cactus, it is a succulent Euphorbia, and like all Euphorbia it has a milky sap that can irritate skin and eyes. Wear gloves if a stem breaks. Clean, no scars to note.

Pictured in its nursery pot for scale. It ships rooted and bare root, without soil or the pot.

  • Light: Bright light to full sun, with some afternoon shade in hot climates

Please note: This is a rooted, bare-root plant shipped without soil or a pot. You will receive the exact plant pictured.

Cactus Care

Euphorbia anoplia is easy and compact. It likes bright light, a quick-draining mix, and to stay dry and warm in winter.

  • Light: Bright light to full sun. A sunny windowsill works well indoors. Outside, give it afternoon shade in very hot summers.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Water deeply, then let the mix dry completely before watering again. Keep it nearly dry in winter.
  • Soil: Gritty, fast-draining cactus mix in a pot with a drainage hole.
  • Temperature: Best kept above about 35 F. Treat it as a potted plant outside USDA zones 10 to 11.
  • Feeding: A diluted cactus fertilizer once or twice in spring and summer.
