What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact San Pedro cutting pictured, unrooted, shipped without soil or a pot. After arrival: unbox with thick gloves, the spines are long and sharp. The cut end is already callused. Stand it upright in dry, fast-draining cactus mix (bury the bottom 3-4 inches and stake it if needed) in bright shade. Do not water for 2-3 weeks, then water lightly and let it dry fully between waterings. Move it into full sun once it resists a gentle tug, usually within 6-10 weeks in warm weather. Some scuffing of spines in transit is normal and does not harm the plant.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

How to root your cutting

1. Let it callous. Keep the cutting upright in a dry, shaded spot for 2 to 3 weeks so the base fully hardens. Do not water it during this time.

2. Plant it. Set the calloused end 1 to 2 inches deep in dry, well-draining cactus soil. A terracotta pot with a drainage hole works best.

3. Wait, then water lightly. Hold off on water for about a week after planting, then water sparingly until roots take hold. Start it in bright, indirect light and move to full sun over a few weeks.

This is the exact plant you will receive. A one of a kind San Pedro cactus (Echinopsis pachanoi, also sold as Trichocereus pachanoi) cutting about 43 inches long and about 4 inches across, a single straight column with a clean crown, smooth blue-green ribs and short spines. No scars or sunburn.

This is the cutting we take on camera in our new video San Pedro Cactus Care: How to Grow It and Avoid 3 Common Mistakes. The video walks through exactly how to root it.

The cut end has been drying since filming. Check that it is fully callused (dry and firm to the touch) before planting, usually two to three weeks from the cut. Stand it upright in dry, fast-draining mix in bright shade, hold off on water for two to three weeks, then move it into full sun once it has taken hold. A cutting this size roots into a big plant fast: San Pedro is one of the fastest growing columnar cacti and can add a foot a year in the ground.

  • Light: Bright shade while rooting, then full sun to partial shade
  • Water: None until rooted, then soak and dry, nearly dry in winter
  • Hardiness: USDA zones 9 to 11, brief dips to about 20 F when dry
  • Growth: Fast, up to a foot a year in the ground once rooted

Please note: This is an unrooted, callused cutting shipped without soil or a pot. You will receive the exact cutting pictured.

Cold Weather Warning

If your area drops below 40°F during the colder months, we highly recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as we don’t automatically include one. This helps keep your plants safe in transit. 🌡️❄️

Cactus Care

San Pedro is the easy one. Root the cutting first, then it grows fast, forgives mistakes and flowers big. The care video linked above shows the whole process on this exact cutting.

  • Light: Bright shade while rooting, then full sun to light afternoon shade. In hot inland areas a little afternoon shade prevents sunburn on the crown.
  • Water: Nothing until rooted (two to four weeks after planting). Then soak and dry: water deeply, let the soil dry completely. Nearly dry in winter.
  • Soil: Sandy, fast-draining cactus mix or a well-drained landscape bed with added pumice or gravel.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11. Tolerates brief dips to about 20 F when dry; protect from hard freezes.
  • Feeding: None until rooted. Then a balanced cactus fertilizer monthly in spring and summer. None in winter.
