What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact three-head Red Barrel cluster pictured, freshly dug, shipped rooted and bare root without soil or a pot. After arrival: unbox with thick gloves, the spines are sharp. Let the plant rest in a shaded, dry spot for 2-3 days, then plant in a sandy, fast-draining mix or a gravelly full-sun spot. Wait about a week before the first watering so the roots can settle, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Some scuffing of spines in transit is normal and does not harm the plant.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

This is the exact plant you will receive. A one of a kind Red Barrel Cactus (Ferocactus sp.) growing as a three-headed cluster about 14 inches long and 9 inches wide. Each head throws long blood-red central spines through a mat of fine white hair-like radials, and the new growth at the crowns is the deepest red of all. Backlit by the sun it glows.

Red-spined Ferocactus are the showpieces of the barrel world, and a multi-head cluster is the rare form: most barrels sold are single heads. This one grew its three heads on its own in our field. Ferocactus sp. is the honest label; it is from the fire barrel group and we have not pinned the species.

Field dug and shipped rooted as one cluster. Plant it in fast-draining mix in full sun, wait a week before the first water, then soak and dry. Handle with tongs or folded cardboard, the spines are serious.

Fire barrels want desert conditions: full sun, gritty soil and a dry winter. The red spine color is strongest in bright light.

  • Light: Full sun. Bright light keeps the spines red and the heads tight.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Water deeply in the growing season, then let the soil dry completely. Nearly dry in winter.
  • Soil: Sandy, fast-draining cactus mix or a gravelly landscape bed. Barrels rot fast in wet soil.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11. Tolerates a light frost when dry; protect below about 25 F.
  • Feeding: A diluted cactus fertilizer once or twice in spring and summer is plenty.
