Plant facts
What to expect in the box
Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.
How to root your cutting
1. Let it callous. Keep the cutting upright in a dry, shaded spot for 2 to 3 weeks so the base fully hardens. Do not water it during this time.
2. Plant it. Set the calloused end 1 to 2 inches deep in dry, well-draining cactus soil. A terracotta pot with a drainage hole works best.
3. Wait, then water lightly. Hold off on water for about a week after planting, then water sparingly until roots take hold. Start it in bright, indirect light and move to full sun over a few weeks.
This is the exact plant you will receive. A one of a kind Stenocereus griseus cutting, the Pitayo de Mayo, a straight single column about 36 inches tall and 4 inches across, taken from a mature plant with a corky trunk. Rounded ribs carry evenly spaced white areoles, each with a neat star of silver spines, over fresh bright green skin. The cut end is callused and ready to root.
Pitayo de Mayo is a fruit cactus from Mexico, Colombia and Venezuela that grows into a tall candelabra tree and is farmed for its sweet pitaya fruit. It is fast for a columnar cactus, and a cutting this size roots into a big plant quickly.
Stand it in dry, fast-draining mix in bright shade, hold off on water for two to three weeks, then move it into full sun once it has taken hold.
- Light: Full sun once rooted
- Water: Low. None until rooted, then soak and dry, minimal in winter
- Hardiness: USDA zones 9 to 11, protect from hard freezes
- Growth: Fast columnar tree, branching with age
Please note: This is an unrooted, callused cutting shipped without soil or a pot. You will receive the exact cutting pictured.
