What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact 44 inch Stenocereus griseus column pictured, shipped rooted and bare root without soil or a pot, in a long box. After arrival: this is a tall, heavy, sharply spined plant, so unbox with thick gloves and a second person if possible. Let it rest upright in a shaded, dry spot for 3-4 days, then plant in a sandy, fast-draining mix or a gravelly full-sun spot and stake it. Wait about a week before the first watering so the roots can settle, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Some scuffing of spines in transit is normal and does not harm the plant.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

A one of a kind single column of Stenocereus griseus, the Pitayo de Mayo or Dagger Cactus, standing about 44 inches tall (just under 4 feet) and about 4 inches across. Ten straight ribs run the full length, each lined with gray-felted areoles and neat stars of gray spines with a red flush on the newest growth at the crown.

Stenocereus griseus is the classic pitaya fruit cactus of Mexico, Venezuela and the Caribbean coast, grown for sweet red-fleshed fruit and large night-blooming white flowers. A straight, unblemished column this tall is an instant vertical statement in a courtyard, entry bed or large container.

Pitayo de Mayo is a heat-loving fruit cactus. Full sun, fast drainage and deep, infrequent water are the whole recipe.

  • Light: Full sun. Light afternoon shade is fine in the hottest inland gardens.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Water deeply, then let the soil dry completely. Nearly dry in winter.
  • Soil: Sandy, fast-draining cactus mix or a gravelly, well-drained landscape bed.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11. Protect from frost below about 28 F, especially when wet.
  • Feeding: A diluted cactus fertilizer once or twice in spring and summer.
