What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact five-stem Stenocereus griseus clump pictured, shipped rooted and bare root without soil or a pot. After arrival: unbox with thick gloves. Let the plant rest in a shaded, dry spot for 2-3 days, then plant in a sandy, fast-draining mix or a gravelly full-sun spot. Wait about a week before the first watering so the roots can settle, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Small offsets may loosen slightly in transit. Firm them into the soil when planting and they will root in place.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

This is the exact plant you will receive. A one of a kind five-stem clump of Stenocereus griseus, the Pitayo de Mayo or Dagger Cactus. The main stem stands about 20 inches tall and is ringed by four offsets of 6 to 10 inches, giving the clump a footprint of roughly 12 inches. Every stem carries six to seven ribs studded with gray, star-shaped spine clusters.

Stenocereus griseus is the classic pitaya fruit cactus of Mexico, Venezuela and the Caribbean coast, grown for its sweet red-fleshed fruit and night-blooming white flowers. A clump like this, already branched from the base, gives you a multi-trunk specimen years ahead of a single cutting.

This plant was field grown in full San Diego County sun and shows the yellow-green sun blush that comes with it. It greens up again with a little afternoon shade or as the days shorten.

  • Light: Full sun
  • Water: Low. Soak and dry, minimal in winter
  • Hardiness: USDA zones 9 to 11, protect from hard freezes
  • Growth: Fast columnar cactus, forms a tree with age

Please note: This is a rooted, bare-root plant shipped without soil or a pot. You will receive the exact clump pictured.

Cold Weather Warning

If your area drops below 40°F during the colder months, we highly recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as we don’t automatically include one. This helps keep your plants safe in transit. 🌡️❄️

Cactus Care

Pitayo de Mayo is a heat-loving fruit cactus. Full sun, fast drainage and deep, infrequent water are the whole recipe.

  • Light: Full sun. Light afternoon shade is fine in the hottest inland gardens and helps the stems stay deep green.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Water deeply, then let the soil dry completely. Nearly dry in winter.
  • Soil: Sandy, fast-draining cactus mix or a gravelly, well-drained landscape bed.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11. Protect from frost below about 28 F, especially when wet.
  • Feeding: A diluted cactus fertilizer once or twice in spring and summer.
