What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact Euphorbia ferox cluster pictured, freshly dug, shipped rooted and bare root without soil or a pot. Wear gloves: the sap is an irritant. After arrival: unbox with thick gloves, the spines are sharp. Let the plant rest in a shaded, dry spot for 2-3 days, then plant in a sandy, fast-draining mix or a gravelly full-sun spot. Wait about a week before the first watering so the roots can settle, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Some scuffing of spines in transit is normal and does not harm the plant.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

This is the exact plant you will receive. A one of a kind Pincushion Euphorbia (Euphorbia ferox), a mature cluster of about ten heads measured at 6.5 inches across and 5 inches tall. One tall central stem with a ring of offsets around its base, every one of them covered in long purple to plum spines over bright green ribs. The color is strongest on new growth and in full sun, which is where this plant has been living.

Euphorbia ferox is a South African succulent, not a cactus, though it plays the part well. Small starter plants are easy to find. A field-grown cluster this size, with this much spine color, takes years.

Handling note: like all Euphorbias it has a milky white sap that irritates skin and eyes. Wear gloves, wash your hands after handling, and keep it away from pets and children who chew on plants.

Euphorbia ferox is a tough South African succulent. Give it sun, sharp drainage and a dry winter, and handle it with gloves.

  • Light: Full sun to light shade. More sun means deeper purple spines.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Water deeply, then let the soil dry completely before watering again. Nearly dry in winter.
  • Soil: Sandy, fast-draining cactus mix, or a gravelly landscape bed on a slope or mound.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11. Protect below about 28 F.
  • Feeding: A diluted cactus fertilizer once or twice in spring and summer is plenty.
