What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact Espostoa lanata pictured, about 26.5 inches tall, shipped rooted and bare root without soil or a pot. The decorative planter shown in the photos is not included. After arrival: handle with thick gloves, as sharp spines sit hidden beneath the wool. Let it rest in a shaded, dry spot for 2-3 days, then pot it in a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix in a container with a drainage hole, set deep enough to stand steady. Wait about a week before the first watering so the roots can settle, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Water at the soil rather than over the top so the white wool stays clean and bright.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

This is the exact plant you will receive. A one of a kind Espostoa lanata (Peruvian Old Man Cactus) standing about 26.5 inches tall, wrapped head to base in dense white wool with amber spines pushing through and a thick woolly cap at the crown.

We potted this one ourselves, and the photos show exactly why. In a good pot, in the right spot, this plant is a showpiece. The white wool reads almost like fur against a dark planter, and it holds that look year round with almost no care.

It is an easy, forgiving grower. Full sun to bright light, gritty soil, and infrequent water are all it asks.

  • Light: Full sun to bright light
  • Water: Low. Soak and dry, minimal in winter
  • Hardiness: USDA zones 9b to 11
  • Growth: Slow to moderate woolly column

Please note: This is a rooted, bare-root plant shipped without soil or a pot. The decorative pot shown in the photos is not included, it is there to show the plant styled. You will receive the exact cactus pictured.

Cold Weather Warning

If your area drops below 40°F during the colder months, we highly recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as we don’t automatically include one. This helps keep your plants safe in transit. 🌡️❄️

Cactus Care

The Peruvian Old Man is one of the easiest woolly columnar cacti to keep, indoors or out. Bright light and a dry root run keep the wool clean and white.

  • Light: Full sun to bright light. Strong light keeps the wool dense. Ease it into full sun to avoid scorch.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Water deeply, then wait until the soil is completely dry. Keep nearly dry in winter.
  • Soil: Gritty, fast-draining cactus mix in a pot with a drainage hole.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9b-11. Protect from frost or bring it indoors for winter in colder areas.
  • Keeping the wool white: Water at the soil rather than over the top. Overhead watering mats and stains the wool. Sharp spines hide under it, so handle with gloves.
