What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact Owl Eye Cactus ring pictured, about 6.5 inches across, rooted and shipped bare without soil or a pot. After arrival: unbox with thick gloves, the spines are sharp. Let the plant rest in a shaded, dry spot for 2-3 days, then plant in a sandy, fast-draining mix or a gravelly full-sun spot. Wait about a week before the first watering so the roots can settle, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Some scuffing of spines in transit is normal and does not harm the plant.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

This is the exact plant you will receive. A one of a kind Mammillaria parkinsonii Owl Eye Cactus, about 6.5 inches across, dug from the ground on our farm in Fallbrook, California.

Owl Eyes grow by splitting their heads in two, over and over. This one kept splitting outward until it formed a ring, a fuzzy white donut of heads around an open center. The white tufts are the wool that grows at each head, normal for the species. To be upfront: the old center has died back and is bare, and there are a few gray scars on the surface. It is healthy and still growing, and the price reflects the marks.

It ships rooted and bare root, wrapped and padded, without soil or a pot.

  • Light: Full sun to light afternoon shade
  • Water: Low. Soak and dry, nearly dry in winter
  • Hardiness: USDA zones 9 to 11
  • Growth: Slow, keeps splitting into more heads

Want one like it? Our regular Owl Eye listing has 3 to 7 inch plants. Not the exact plant pictured. Shop Owl Eye Cactus.

Please note: This is a rooted, bare-root plant shipped without soil or a pot. You will receive the exact plant pictured.

Cold Weather Warning

If your area drops below 40°F during the colder months, we highly recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as we don’t automatically include one. This helps keep your plants safe in transit. 🌡️❄️

Cactus Care

Owl Eye wants bright light, sharp drainage, and a dry winter. Keep water off the woolly crowns.

  • Light: Full sun on the coast, bright light with some afternoon shade in hot inland spots. Bright window or grow light indoors.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Water deeply, let the soil dry completely, keep it nearly dry in winter. Water around the plant, not into the woolly crowns.
  • Soil: Gritty, fast-draining cactus mix in a pot with a drainage hole, or a raised, gravelly bed.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11. Takes a light frost when dry, cover it in a hard freeze.
  • Feeding: A diluted cactus fertilizer once or twice in spring and summer.
