What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact Old Man of the Andes pictured, approx 14 in tall with its basal pup, shipped rooted and bare root without soil or a pot. After arrival: unbox with gloves, let the plant rest in a shaded, dry spot for 2 to 3 days, then plant in sandy, fast-draining soil at the same depth it grew before. Wait about a week before the first watering, then water deeply and let the soil dry out completely between waterings. A little soil on the hair rinses off with a gentle spray once established.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

This is the exact plant you will receive. A one of a kind, field-grown Oreocereus celsianus, the Old Man of the Andes. The main column stands approximately 14 inches tall and 3.5 inches thick (approximate) with a 4 inch pup at the base, wrapped in long silky white hair threaded with strong golden spines. The corky, woody base is natural old growth on this species and a mark of a genuinely mature plant.

In the high Andes that white hair is sunscreen and frost blanket in one, and it gives every plant its own windswept character. This one has years of it.
