What to expect in the box

After Arrival: Carefully unpack your cactus and allow it a day or two to adjust before watering. Since these are shipped bare-root or in small pots, plant into well-draining cactus soil if needed, and wait about a week before watering to help it settle in.

Transplant Tips: Choose a container with drainage holes. Repot every few years as the cactus grows and branches. Wear gloves to handle safely.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

Blue Candle Cactus (Myrtillocactus geometrizans)

A striking cactus with blue-green skin and upright columns that branch as it matures, creating a dramatic, tree-like shape. Known for its beautiful color and edible purple berries, this cactus makes a stunning addition to any desert landscape or collection.

Growth Habit: Upright, branching Bloom Season: Spring Dormancy: Winter Sun Exposure: Full sun Soil Needs: Fast-draining cactus mix Hardiness Zones: 9–11 Native To: Central Mexico

In the wild, Blue Candle Cactus can grow into large shrubs or small trees up to 15 feet tall. Its powdery blue skin and branching arms give it a sculptural, architectural look that pairs beautifully with golden barrels and other desert classics. In spring, small greenish-white flowers appear, followed by dark purple fruits sometimes called “garambullos,” which are edible and used in jams and drinks in Mexico.

What you’ll receive:

You will receive a healthy, rooted Blue Candle Cactus ranging in size from 2" potted starts up to 15" tall. All plants are carefully dug, prepared, and shipped bare-root or in pot size as selected.

Please note: This listing is for a rooted, bare-root plant: it already has a developed root system and is shipped without soil or a pot, ready to plant on arrival. Some plants may have minor scars, which are totally normal. Any discoloration at the base is from previous healthy growth in soil and is not a sign of damage. Every plant is hand-picked and guaranteed to arrive healthy.

Cold Weather Warning

If your area drops below 40°F during the colder months, we highly recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as we don’t automatically include one. This helps keep your plants safe in transit. 🌡️❄️

Cactus Care

After Arrival
Carefully unpack your cactus as soon as it arrives. Since this is a rooted plant, it already has a developed root system and can be planted or displayed right away. If shipped bare-root, pot it in cactus soil and wait about a week before giving it a light watering to help it settle into its new environment.

Sunlight Introduction
Let your cactus adjust in bright, indirect light for a few days before moving it into full sun, especially if it was shipped in a box.

Light
This cactus loves full sun. Outdoors, give it all the light you can. Indoors, place it by your sunniest window, ideally with 6+ hours of direct sunlight daily.

Watering
Use the soak-and-dry method. Water thoroughly, then allow the soil to fully dry before watering again. In cooler months, reduce watering significantly.

Soil & Pots
Use a well-draining cactus mix with sand or perlite. Terracotta pots are ideal. Always use a pot with drainage holes to prevent rot.

Growth & Repotting
Blue Candle Cactus grows quickly and can branch out with age. Repot every 1–2 years, or when the plant becomes root-bound. After repotting, wait about a week before watering.

FAQ

How fast does it grow?
It’s one of the faster-growing columnar cacti. In warm, sunny conditions, it can grow a few feet per year.

How often should I water it?
Only when the soil is fully dry. Typically every 1–2 weeks in summer, and once a month or less in winter.

Can I grow it indoors?
Yes, as long as it gets strong, direct sunlight. A bright south- or west-facing window is ideal.

Will it flower or fruit?
Mature plants can bloom in late winter or spring and may produce small edible blue fruits. However, this is more likely outdoors.

Do I need to fertilize?
You can feed it in spring or summer with cactus fertilizer at half strength, but it's not essential.
