What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact two head Mexican Lime Cactus pictured, about 15 inches across the spines, rooted and shipped bare without soil or a pot. After arrival: unbox with thick gloves, the spines are sharp. Let the plant rest in a shaded, dry spot for 2-3 days, then plant in a sandy, fast-draining mix or a gravelly full-sun spot. Wait about a week before the first watering so the roots can settle, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Some scuffing of spines in transit is normal and does not harm the plant.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

This is the exact plant you will receive. A one of a kind two head Ferocactus pilosus Mexican Lime Cactus, about 15 inches across the spines (about 13 inches across the two bodies, roughly 9 inches tall), grown in the ground on our farm in Fallbrook, California.

Two barrels side by side, covered in fire red spines with soft white hair woven through them. That hair is what the name pilosus means, and this one carries more of it than most of our Mexican Limes. Most stay single for years, so a two head plant is the one to build a bed around.

It ships rooted and bare root, wrapped and padded, without soil or a pot. Heavy, so allow a little extra handling time.

  • Light: Full sun for the reddest spines
  • Water: Low. Soak and dry, nearly dry in winter
  • Hardiness: USDA zones 9 to 11, takes a light frost when dry
  • Growth: Slow, each head widens an inch or so a year

Want one like it? Our regular Mexican Lime listing has single heads from 8 to 17 inches, grown on the same farm. Not the exact plant pictured. Shop Mexican Lime Cactus.

Please note: This is a rooted, bare-root plant shipped without soil or a pot. You will receive the exact plant pictured.

Cold Weather Warning

If your area drops below 40°F during the colder months, we highly recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as we don’t automatically include one. This helps keep your plants safe in transit. 🌡️❄️

Cactus Care

Mexican Lime wants full sun, sharp drainage, and a dry winter. More sun means redder spines.

  • Light: Full sun. In very hot inland spots it takes some afternoon shade, but spine color is best in full sun.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Water deeply, let the soil dry completely, keep it nearly dry in winter.
  • Soil: Sandy, fast-draining cactus mix or a gravelly bed. Do not plant it deeper than it grew.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11. Takes a light frost when dry, cover it in a hard freeze.
  • Feeding: A diluted cactus fertilizer once or twice in spring and summer.
