What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact four arm Mexican Fence Post pictured, about 29 inches tall, dug from our farm and shipped rooted and bare root without soil or a pot. After arrival: unbox with thick gloves, the spines are sharp. Let the plant rest in a shaded, dry spot for 2-3 days, then plant in a sandy, fast-draining mix or a gravelly full-sun spot. Wait about a week before the first watering so the roots can settle, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Some scuffing of spines in transit is normal and does not harm the plant.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

This is the exact plant you will receive. A one of a kind branched Pachycereus marginatus Mexican Fence Post, about 29 inches tall, grown in the ground on our farm in Fallbrook, California.

The trunk was cut years ago and answered with four arms, so it already has the candelabra shape most fence posts take a decade to make. This one is spinier than our usual fence posts, with longer white spines down every rib. The healed cut on top of the trunk shows in the photos and is part of the look.

It ships rooted and bare root, wrapped and padded, without soil or a pot.

Mexican Fence Post is one of the easiest columnar cacti. Full sun, fast drainage, and water only when the soil is fully dry.

  • Light: Full sun. Ease it in over a week or two after shipping so the skin does not sunburn.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Water deeply, then let the soil dry completely. Nearly dry in winter.
  • Soil: Sandy, fast-draining cactus mix in a heavy pot with a drainage hole, or a gravelly landscape bed.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11. Takes a light frost when dry; protect below about 28 F.
  • Feeding: A diluted cactus fertilizer once or twice in spring and summer.
