What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact Madagascar Palm pictured, about 14 inches tall, shipped rooted and bare root without soil or a pot. After arrival: unbox with thick gloves, the spines are sharp. Let the plant rest in a shaded, dry spot for 2-3 days, then plant in a sandy, fast-draining mix or a gravelly full-sun spot. Wait about a week before the first watering so the roots can settle, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Some scuffing of spines in transit is normal and does not harm the plant.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

This is the exact plant you will receive. A one of a kind Pachypodium lamerei, the Madagascar Palm, standing about 14 inches tall in its 6 inch nursery pot, roughly 9 inches above the soil line. The trunk is about 4.5 inches tall and 1.3 inches thick, silver gray and armored in straight spines set in threes, topped with a full crown of long glossy green leaves with a pale midrib.

It is not a palm and not a cactus. It is a caudex forming succulent from Madagascar that stores water in that fat trunk, so it shrugs off missed waterings. Honest note: two of the lowest leaves have gone yellow, which is normal seasonal shedding as the plant pushes new leaves from the top. Everything else is clean and firm. Like its relatives it has a milky sap, so wear gloves if a leaf or spine breaks.

Pictured in its nursery pot for scale. It ships rooted and bare root, wrapped and padded, without soil or the pot.

Cold Weather Warning

If your area drops below 40°F during the colder months, we highly recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as we don’t automatically include one. This helps keep your plants safe in transit. 🌡️❄️

Cactus Care

Madagascar Palm is one of the easiest caudex plants to keep. Give it the brightest spot you have, water only when dry, and do not panic when it drops leaves in winter.

  • Light: Full sun outdoors in warm months, or the brightest window you have. More light means a thicker trunk and a fuller crown.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Water deeply, then let the mix dry completely before watering again. In winter water only every few weeks. It often drops some or all leaves in winter and regrows them in spring.
  • Soil: Gritty, fast-draining cactus mix in a pot with a drainage hole.
  • Temperature: Not frost hardy. Keep it above about 40 F. Outside USDA zones 10 to 11 treat it as a potted plant and bring it in for winter.
  • Feeding: A diluted balanced fertilizer monthly in spring and summer, none in winter.
