What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact two-headed Golden Torch pictured, freshly dug, shipped rooted and bare root without soil or a pot. After arrival: unbox with thick gloves, the spines are sharp. Let the plant rest in a shaded, dry spot for 2-3 days, then plant in a sandy, fast-draining mix or a gravelly full-sun spot. Wait about a week before the first watering so the roots can settle, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Some scuffing of spines in transit is normal and does not harm the plant.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

This is the exact plant you will receive. A one of a kind rooted Golden Torch cactus (Echinopsis spachiana, also sold as Trichocereus spachianus) with two heads branching from one base: the taller about 12 inches, the second about 10 inches, each around 2.5 inches across. Bright green ribs, amber-brown spines and the golden wool crown that gives the species its name. It grew in our field rows and will be dug for you when it ships.

Golden Torch is an easy, fast columnar cactus from northern Argentina. It clumps from the base into a stand of golden-spined columns and opens big white night flowers once the stems reach a couple of feet. Two heads means the stand is already started.

Golden Torch is a tough, fast grower that wants sun, sharp drainage and a dry winter. Treat it like a San Pedro with better spines.

  • Light: Full sun. At least six hours of direct sun keeps the columns tight and the spines golden.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Water deeply, then let the soil dry completely. Nearly dry in winter.
  • Soil: Sandy, fast-draining cactus mix or a well-drained landscape bed with added pumice or gravel.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11. Tolerates brief dips to about 20 F when dry; protect from hard freezes.
  • Feeding: A balanced cactus fertilizer monthly in spring and summer. None in winter.
