What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact Golden Rat Tail clump pictured, longest tail about 17 inches, shipped rooted and bare root without soil or a pot. After arrival: unbox promptly and let the plant rest in a shaded, dry spot for 1-2 days. Pot it in a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix, ideally in a raised pot or hanging basket so the tails can trail. Wait about a week before the first watering so the roots can settle, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. The golden bristles look soft but they are still spines, so handle with gloves. Some tails may shift or bend in transit, which is normal and does not harm the plant.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

This is the exact plant you will receive. A one of a kind Golden Rat Tail clump, a full multi-stem plant with the longest tail measuring about 17 inches. Every stem is sheathed in soft golden bristles that glow when the light hits them.

This is a producer. We have taken a lot of cuttings off this plant already and it keeps pushing new tails, and we are sending the whole clump exactly as photographed. Great If you want to propagate from this is one. Each tail you cut roots easily and becomes its own plant.

It is easy and forgiving. Bright light, gritty soil, and infrequent water, and it will trail beautifully over the edge of a pot or hanging basket.

  • Light: Full sun to bright light
  • Water: Low. Soak and dry, minimal in winter
  • Hardiness: USDA zones 9b to 11
  • Growth: Moderate, trailing and clumping

Please note: This is a rooted, bare-root plant shipped without soil or a pot. You will receive the exact clump pictured.

Cold Weather Warning

If your area drops below 40°F during the colder months, we highly recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as we don’t automatically include one. This helps keep your plants safe in transit. 🌡️❄️

Cactus Care

The Golden Rat Tail is easy, fast to root, and one of the most rewarding cacti to propagate. Bright light keeps the golden bristles dense.

  • Light: Full sun to bright light. More light means a richer gold color on the bristles.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Water deeply, then let the soil dry out fully. Keep nearly dry in winter.
  • Soil: Gritty, fast-draining cactus mix. It looks best in a raised pot or hanging basket where the tails can trail.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9b-11. Protect from frost or bring it indoors for winter.
  • Taking cuttings: Cut a tail cleanly at the base, let the cut end callus for about a week, then set it in dry gritty mix. Do not water until it anchors. The bristles are soft but still spines, so use gloves.
