Opening a pod is the best part, and it is not hard. Here is the exact method we use at the farm.

Opening your pod

1. Work over a white bowl or plate so you can see everything that falls out. The seeds are small and will scatter if you open a pod in your lap.
2. Pinch or tear the pod open. A cured pod is light and papery and gives easily, no knife needed.
3. Do not expect the seeds to pour out. Inside, they sit in a matrix of dried pulp and white wool that holds onto them. Break the pod apart and crumble that matrix between your fingers to free them.
4. Separate seed from chaff. Tipping the bowl and blowing gently across it lifts the light wool and pod wall and leaves the heavier seed behind.
5. Check what you have. Good seeds are plump and hard, glossy, and colored deep red through to brown-black. Flat pale flakes are empty and can be tossed.
6. If a pod feels heavy or soft rather than light and papery, it has not finished curing. Leave it open in a dry, airy spot for a week before you sow or store the seed.

How to sow

1. Rub the seeds for a few seconds between two sheets of fine sandpaper, then soak them overnight in water. Research on this species found that most seeds sit dormant until the seed coat is scuffed, so this step makes a real difference. Try half the batch scarified and half plain and see it for yourself.
2. Fill a small pot or tray with a fine, fast-draining mix, such as a cactus mix or a pumice and sand blend. Water it well and let it drain.
3. Scatter the seeds evenly across the surface. Do not bury them. Cactus seeds need light and surface contact to sprout. Press them in very lightly.
4. Optional: dust a thin layer of fine grit or sand over the top to hold the seeds in place.
5. Cover the container with a clear lid, dome, or zip-top bag to trap humidity. This is your mini greenhouse.
6. Set it somewhere warm, 70 to 85F, in bright but indirect light. Never direct midday sun while it is covered, that will cook the seedlings.
7. Keep the surface damp, never bone dry, while the seeds are germinating. Mist or bottom-water as needed.
8. Watch for sprouts. Golden Barrel usually shows tiny green globes in 10 to 21 days, faster with scarified seed. Some sprout quickly and stragglers take longer, so be patient.
9. Once most have sprouted, vent the cover a little more each week over the next month or two to toughen the seedlings up.
10. When seedlings reach the size of a pea and start to crowd, usually a few months in, gently prick them out and pot them up on their own.

Caring for your seedlings

• Light: bright light, and build up sun exposure slowly over several months so they do not scorch.
• Water: keep the mix lightly moist for the first several months, the opposite of a grown cactus. After about six months, switch to soak and dry and water only when the mix is fully dry.
• Soil: once potted up, keep them in a gritty, fast-draining mix.
• Patience: Golden Barrel is a slow grower. Expect golf-ball size in about two to three years, and a solitary golden globe 2 to 3 feet across at maturity. Slow and steady wins.
