What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact Golden Barrel pictured, shipped rooted and bare root without soil or a pot. The seed pods stay on the crown. After arrival: unbox with thick gloves, the spines are sharp. Let the plant rest in a shaded, dry spot for 2-3 days, then plant in a sandy, fast-draining mix or a gravelly full-sun spot. Wait about a week before the first watering so the roots can settle, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Some scuffing of spines in transit is normal and does not harm the plant.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

This is the exact plant you will receive. A one of a kind Golden Barrel cactus (Echinocactus grusonii) about 16 inches across and 15 inches tall, a full flowering-size barrel with deep green ribs and long golden spines. The crown is packed with dried seed pods from this summer's flowers, plus a fresh yellow bud, so it is proven to bloom and you get a season of seed with it.

It grew in our farm rows and has been sitting next to an irrigation line, getting more water than a barrel needs. That is the only reason it is leaving the farm. It is firm and healthy, and in a normal dry spot it will be happier than it is now.

A barrel this size takes 15 to 20 years to grow. Full sun, fast-draining soil, deep water only when the soil is dry.

  • Light: Full sun
  • Water: Low. Soak and dry, nearly dry in winter
  • Hardiness: USDA zones 9 to 11, brief dips to about 20 F when dry
  • Growth: Slow, an inch or so of diameter a year

Please note: This is a rooted, bare-root plant shipped without soil or a pot. You will receive the exact plant pictured.

Cold Weather Warning

If your area drops below 40°F during the colder months, we highly recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as we don’t automatically include one. This helps keep your plants safe in transit. 🌡️❄️

Cactus Care

Golden Barrel is a sun and drainage plant. Give it full sun, sharp soil and a dry winter and it is nearly indestructible.

  • Light: Full sun. At least six hours of direct sun keeps the spines golden and the body tight.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Water deeply, then let the soil dry completely. Nearly dry in winter. Overwatering is the one thing that kills a barrel.
  • Soil: Sandy, fast-draining cactus mix or a well-drained landscape bed with added pumice or gravel.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11. Tolerates brief dips to about 20 F when dry; protect the crown from hard freezes.
  • Feeding: A diluted cactus fertilizer once or twice in spring and summer is plenty. None in winter.
