What to expect in the box

Your plant is hand-picked, wrapped in protective kraft paper, and shipped on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. It arrives bare root: a fully rooted plant shipped without a pot or soil, ready to plant right away.

Minor scars or pitting on the skin are normal for hardgrown cacti. Any discoloration near the base is from previous healthy growth in soil and is not a sign of damage.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

Meet the Variegated Corncob Cactus, one of the most distinctive succulents you can own. Despite the name, Euphorbia mammillaris 'Variegata' is not a true cactus. It is a sculptural euphorbia that grows in short, ribbed, corn-cob-shaped columns. The variegated form trades the usual green for cool, ghostly tones of silvery mint and cream, accented by slender spines that blush pink and gold in bright light. It clumps slowly over time into a striking little colony.

Easy to care for and endlessly photogenic, this is a standout on a sunny windowsill or in a collector's lineup.

Care Notes

  • Light: Bright light with some gentle direct sun. The variegated form has less chlorophyll than the green species, so protect it from harsh afternoon sun to prevent scorching while keeping it bright enough to hold its color.
  • Water: Drought tolerant. Let the soil dry out completely, then water thoroughly. Cut back to occasional watering in winter when growth slows.
  • Soil: A gritty, fast-draining cactus and succulent mix. Good drainage is essential to avoid rot.
  • Temperature & Hardiness: Tender. Comfortable outdoors in USDA zones 9b through 11. Protect from frost and bring indoors when temperatures drop below about 40°F. It prefers to stay above 50°F.
  • Growth: Slow growing and clumping, forming tidy columns a few inches tall over time.
  • Good to Know: Like all euphorbias, the milky sap is toxic and can irritate skin and eyes. Handle with gloves and keep away from curious pets and children.

Ships in a 6 inch nursery pot, carefully packed to arrive safely at your door.

Cold Weather Warning

If your area drops below 40°F during the colder months, we highly recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as we don’t automatically include one. This helps keep your plants safe in transit. 🌡️❄️

Benefits

Striking Variegation - Ghostly mint, silver, and cream coloring you won't find on the common green form.
Sculptural Corn Cob Form - Short, ribbed columns that clump into a living sculpture.
Drought Tolerant and Low Maintenance - Thrives on neglect and minimal water.
Compact Specimen - Stays small, ideal for a sunny windowsill, shelf, or collector's lineup.
Standout Collector Plant - A rare, eye-catching euphorbia that anchors any succulent collection.

Cactus Care

After Arrival: Let your Variegated Corncob settle in a bright, dry spot out of harsh direct sun for a few days. Plant in a gritty, fast draining cactus and succulent mix. Hold off on watering for the first week so it can adjust.

Long-Term Care: Give it bright light with gentle direct sun, protecting it from harsh afternoon rays so the variegation does not scorch. Water only when the soil is completely dry, roughly every 2 to 3 weeks in warm months and far less in winter. Keep it above 40°F and bring it indoors during frost.

Good to Know: Like all euphorbias, the milky sap is toxic and can irritate skin and eyes. Handle with gloves and keep away from pets and children.

✔ Hardiness Zone: 9b-11
