What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact Ferocactus emoryi pictured, shipped rooted and bare root without soil or a pot. After arrival: the spines are long and stiff, so unbox with thick gloves or folded towels. Let it rest in a shaded, dry spot for 2-3 days, then plant in a sandy, gritty, fast-draining mix or a gravelly full-sun landscape spot. Wait about a week before the first watering so the roots can settle, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Flowers are seasonal and will not be open on arrival. Any spent blooms or fruit on the crown may dry and drop in transit, which is normal and harmless.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

This is the exact plant you will receive. A one of a kind, flowering-size Ferocactus emoryi (Emory's Barrel Cactus, also known as Coville's Barrel or the Traveler's Friend), photographed in full bloom with a crown of brilliant red flowers.

This is a deep-green, heavily ribbed barrel armed with long, cross-ribbed horn-gray spines, one stout central per areole. Emory's Barrel only flowers once it reaches real maturity, so a blooming plant like this represents many years of growth. We grew it from seed.

A Sonoran Desert native from Arizona and Sonora, it is built for heat and sun. Give it full sun, gritty fast-draining soil, and deep but infrequent water.

  • Light: Full sun
  • Water: Low. Soak and dry, minimal in winter
  • Hardiness: USDA zones 9 to 11, keep dry in cold
  • Growth: Slow-growing barrel

Please note: This is a rooted, bare-root plant shipped without soil or a pot. You will receive the exact plant pictured. Flowers are seasonal and will not be open on arrival.

Cold Weather Warning

If your area drops below 40°F during the colder months, we highly recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as we don’t automatically include one. This helps keep your plants safe in transit. 🌡️❄️

Cactus Care

Emory's Barrel is a Sonoran Desert native and one of the toughest barrels you can grow. Sun and sharp drainage are the whole job.

  • Light: Full sun. It is built for open desert exposure.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Water deeply, then wait until the soil is completely dry. Keep nearly dry through winter.
  • Soil: Sandy, gritty, fast-draining mix or a gravelly landscape spot. It will not tolerate wet feet.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9-11. It takes sporadic light frost if bone dry, but protect it from hard freezes.
  • Handling: The spines are long, stiff, and genuinely fierce. Move it with thick gloves and folded towels.
