Plant facts

SunlightFull sun
WaterLow water. Only when soil is fully dry
USDA zones9b through 11b, hardy to about 20F
Mature sizeVery small individual rosettes about 1-2 in across, but the plant slowly clumps into a dense mounded 'cushion' (polster). Outdoors over many years a colony can spread up to 3-6 ft wide and low to the ground. In a pot it stays a tight cushion, typically well under 12 in across for years.
Time to matureExtremely slow. Takes many years (roughly 10+ years) to build a sizable cushion; only a small amount of new growth per year. Extra summer water speeds it up slightly.

What to expect in the box

After arrival
Carefully unpack your plant and place it in bright shade for 3–5 days to adjust. Check soil moisture before watering, if damp, wait until fully dry. Slowly acclimate to more sun over the first week.

Transplant tips
Use a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix with 50–70% mineral material. Choose a pot with drainage holes. Repot only when the cushion presses firmly against the pot’s edge, as this species prefers being root-bound.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

Cactus Care

After Arrival

Carefully unpack and place in bright light right away. Since this is sold rooted, it can be potted immediately into a well-draining cactus mix. Wait about a week before watering lightly so the roots settle in.

Sunlight Introduction

Start with bright, indirect sun, then gradually move into full sun over 1–2 weeks. Outdoors it thrives in strong sun; indoors give it a south or west window.

Light

Full sun to partial sun. Needs at least 6+ hours daily for compact growth. Weak light causes it to spread slowly and lose its dense cushion form.

Watering

Very drought tolerant. Water thoroughly, then allow soil to dry completely. In hot months, water about every 10–14 days; in winter, cut back to once every 3–4 weeks.

Soil and Pots

Use a gritty, well-draining cactus/succulent soil. Terracotta pots help extra moisture escape. Avoid oversized pots just enough to fit the root ball snugly.

Growth and Repotting

It’s a slow grower, expanding a few inches per year into larger mats. Repot only every few years or when clumps outgrow the container.
