What to expect in the box
You will receive one rooted, bare-root Lobivia kermesina from a 4 in nursery pot, shipped without soil or a pot. After arrival: unbox promptly and let the plant rest in a shaded, dry spot for 1-2 days. Plant in a sandy, fast-draining cactus mix in a pot with a drainage hole. Wait about a week before the first watering so the roots can settle, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Each plant is unique, so expect some variation from the photos.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

Lobivia kermesina (botanically Echinopsis mamillosa, also sold as Pseudolobivia kermesina) is a neat globular cactus from the high valleys of southern Bolivia, its deep green body dressed in a lattice of fine white spines. The show is the bloom: oversized, funnel-shaped flowers in vivid carmine red that can rival the body of the plant itself.

It is an easy, rewarding grower and one of the more cold-tolerant cacti we carry. Give it bright light, water only after the soil has dried out completely, and it will bloom reliably once mature. Hardy outdoors in USDA zones 9 to 11 when kept dry, it is also perfectly happy indoors on a sunny windowsill.

Lobivia kermesina is an easy, tough little cactus. Bright light, lean soil, and a dry winter rest are all it asks, and the reward is one of the most vivid red blooms in the cactus world.

  • Light: Full sun to partial shade outdoors, or the brightest window you have indoors. A little afternoon shade in hot desert climates keeps the body from scorching.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Water deeply, then wait until the soil is completely dry. Keep it nearly dry through winter.
  • Soil: Sandy, fast-draining cactus mix with plenty of mineral grit.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9-11. A cool, dry winter rest encourages heavier spring flowering.
  • Feeding: Little to none needed. A diluted cactus fertilizer once or twice in the growing season is plenty.
