What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact Crested Blue Candle Cactus specimen shown in the photos, shipped rooted and bare root without soil or a pot. After arrival: unbox promptly and let the plant rest in a shaded, dry spot for 1-2 days. Pot it in a sandy, fast-draining cactus mix in a container with a drainage hole. Wait about a week before the first watering so the roots can settle, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Reintroduce it to full sun gradually over a couple of weeks. Because of its size and shape this specimen requires oversized packaging and may ship separately from the rest of your order.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

A single clean fan has lifted clear of the crest mass below it, giving the piece a distinct silhouette instead of a flat cluster. The raised fan carries heavy blue farina across a smooth face, and the crest beneath it is dense and fully packed, flushing coral and gold along every growing edge.

Cresting is a spontaneous mutation that cannot be propagated on demand. A crest that develops a lifted fan of this quality is uncommon even among crests, which is why this one is priced and listed on its own.

Crested Blue Candle is as easy as the standard species. Give it sun, sharp drainage, and a light hand with the watering can.

  • Light: Full sun outdoors. Indoors, the brightest window you have. Move it into strong sun gradually so the crest does not scorch.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Water deeply, then wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again. Cut back sharply in winter. Overwatering is the number one killer.
  • Soil: Sandy, fast-draining cactus mix with plenty of mineral grit. Always use a pot with a drainage hole.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11. Protect from frost below about 25 F.
  • Feeding: Very little needed. A diluted cactus fertilizer once or twice during the growing season is plenty.
