What to expect in the box
You will receive one rooted, bare-root Crested Blue Candle Cactus shipped without soil or a pot. After arrival: unbox promptly and let the plant rest in a shaded, dry spot for 1-2 days. Pot it in a sandy, fast-draining cactus mix in a container with a drainage hole. Wait about a week before the first watering so the roots can settle, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Reintroduce it to full sun gradually over a couple of weeks. Every crest is unique, so expect variation in shape, width and branching from the photos.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

Crested Blue Candle Cactus (Myrtillocactus geometrizans f. cristata)

The crested form of the classic Blue Candle, and one of the most sculptural cacti we grow. Instead of rising as a single column, the growing point fans out into thick, folded waves that stack into a dense, coral-like mass. The body carries the same powdery blue farina as the standard species, and fresh growth along the crest edges flushes coral, pink and gold.

Cresting is a spontaneous natural mutation. It cannot be propagated on demand, and no two crests grow the same way, which is why well-formed pieces at this size are genuinely hard to find.

About crested growth

Many crested Myrtillocactus eventually push normal columnar stems out of the crest. This is natural reversion, it does not harm the plant, and most growers leave it for the contrast between the smooth blue columns and the folded crest below. You are welcome to remove reverted growth if you prefer a pure fan.

Crested Blue Candle is as easy as the standard species. Give it sun, sharp drainage, and a light hand with the watering can, and it will keep folding new growth for years.

  • Light: Full sun outdoors. Indoors, the brightest window you have. Move it into strong sun gradually so the crest does not scorch.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Water deeply, then wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again. Cut back sharply in winter. Overwatering is the number one killer.
  • Soil: Sandy, fast-draining cactus mix with plenty of mineral grit. Always use a pot with a drainage hole.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11. Protect from frost below about 25 F.
  • Feeding: Very little needed. A diluted cactus fertilizer once or twice during the growing season is plenty.
