What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact unrooted Stenocereus beneckei cutting pictured, about 9.5 inches long, shipped without roots, soil, or a pot. After arrival: let the cut end callus in a dry, shaded spot for 1-2 weeks if it has not already sealed. Then set the cutting upright about an inch deep in dry, gritty, fast-draining cactus mix. Do not water until roots anchor it, usually a few weeks in warm weather, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Ease it into full sun rather than moving it straight into all-day exposure. Expect rub marks and green patches where the white chalk has come off in handling and transit. This is normal on this species and does not harm the plant. New growth returns chalk-white.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

How to root your cutting

1. Let it callous. Keep the cutting upright in a dry, shaded spot for 2 to 3 weeks so the base fully hardens. Do not water it during this time.

2. Plant it. Set the calloused end 1 to 2 inches deep in dry, well-draining cactus soil. A terracotta pot with a drainage hole works best.

3. Wait, then water lightly. Hold off on water for about a week after planting, then water sparingly until roots take hold. Start it in bright, indirect light and move to full sun over a few weeks.

This is the exact cutting you will receive. A one of a kind tip cutting of Stenocereus beneckei, the Chalk Cactus, measuring about 9.5 inches long. This is one of the most striking cacti in cultivation: the stems are coated in a dense, chalk-white wax called farina, set against short dark brown spines, so the plant looks dipped in powder.

That white coating is alive and functional. It is a layer of waxy crystals the plant builds to reflect sun and repel water, and fresh growth comes in the whitest of all. This is a scrambling, shrubby columnar from south-central Mexico that leans and curves as it grows rather than standing perfectly upright.

About the chalk: the farina rubs off at the lightest touch, and water, wind, and handling all take some with them. Expect your cutting to arrive with rub marks and green patches showing through. That is completely normal, it does not harm the plant, and new growth returns chalk-white.

  • Light: Full sun, 5 to 8 hours minimum
  • Water: None until rooted, then low, soak and dry
  • Hardiness: USDA zones 9b to 11
  • Growth: Shrubby columnar, leaning stems to 3-6 ft over time

Please note: This is an unrooted cutting shipped without roots, soil, or a pot. You will receive the exact cutting pictured.

Cold Weather Warning

If your area drops below 40°F during the colder months, we highly recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as we don’t automatically include one. This helps keep your plants safe in transit. 🌡️❄️

Cactus Care

Chalk Cactus cuttings root easily. Callus, plant dry, wait, and keep the light strong to bring the white coating back.

  • Rooting: Let the cut end callus in a dry, shaded spot for 1-2 weeks, then set it upright about an inch deep in dry, gritty mix. Do not water until roots anchor it, usually a few weeks in warm weather.
  • Light: Full sun once established, 5 to 8 hours. Strong light drives the whitest chalk on new growth. Ease it into full sun to avoid scorch.
  • Water: Once rooted, soak and dry. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings and keep it nearly dry in winter.
  • Soil: Gritty, sharply draining cactus mix with up to 50 percent sand and pumice.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9b-11. Protect from frost or bring it in for winter in colder areas.
  • Handling: Handle by the spineless base if you can. Every touch takes some chalk off, and overhead watering will streak it.
