What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact Chalk Cactus cutting pictured, about 10.5 inches long, cut to order, callused, and shipped bare without soil or a pot. After arrival: unbox with thick gloves, the spines are long and sharp. The cut end is already callused. Stand it upright in dry, fast-draining cactus mix (bury the bottom 3-4 inches and stake it if needed) in bright shade. Do not water for 2-3 weeks, then water lightly and let it dry fully between waterings. Move it into full sun once it resists a gentle tug, usually within 6-10 weeks in warm weather. Some scuffing of spines in transit is normal and does not harm the plant.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

How to root your cutting

1. Let it callous. Keep the cutting upright in a dry, shaded spot for 2 to 3 weeks so the base fully hardens. Do not water it during this time.

2. Plant it. Set the calloused end 1 to 2 inches deep in dry, well-draining cactus soil. A terracotta pot with a drainage hole works best.

3. Wait, then water lightly. Hold off on water for about a week after planting, then water sparingly until roots take hold. Start it in bright, indirect light and move to full sun over a few weeks.

This is the exact cutting you will receive. A one of a kind Stenocereus beneckei Chalk Cactus cutting, about 10.5 inches long, taken from the mother plant on our farm in Fallbrook, California.

Chalk Cactus is the white one: the skin carries a powdery chalk coat over blue green flesh, and new spines come in red. It is a rare columnar from southern Mexico and hard to find in any size. You can see green where the chalk has rubbed thin and a few rusty spots at the areoles, normal for a field plant and priced in.

Photographed on the mother plant. We cut it to order and let the cut callus before it ships, so allow up to about a week before it goes out. It ships bare, without soil or a pot.

  • Light: Full sun on the coast, light afternoon shade inland
  • Water: Low. Soak and dry, keep dry in winter
  • Hardiness: USDA zones 10 to 11, protect below about 35 F
  • Growth: Moderate in warm weather

Please note: This is an unrooted, callused cutting shipped without soil or a pot. You will receive the exact cutting pictured.

Cold Weather Warning

If your area drops below 40°F during the colder months, we highly recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as we don’t automatically include one. This helps keep your plants safe in transit. 🌡️❄️
