Spiral Cactus (Cereus peruvianus spiralis)

No two are alike. Every Spiral Cactus corkscrews its own way, so the one you get is truly one of a kind. It is a living sculpture: tall, twisting, and architectural. Best of all, it is hard to kill and easy to love. This is an established, rooted plant, not a cutting you have to nurse along.

Growth Habit: Columnar, spiraling Mature Size: 6 to 13 ft Light: Bright, direct sun Water: Low Hardiness: Zones 9 to 11 (not frost hardy) Pet Safe: Non-toxic, spiny Bloom: White, night-blooming
What you'll receive:

One rooted Cereus peruvianus spiralis in the size you choose, with a healthy, established root system. Shipped bare-root so it travels light and settles in fast. Minor scars or base discoloration are normal.

Who it's for

Collectors and anyone who wants a true one-of-a-kind, a bright sunny window or grow lights, outdoor gardeners in zones 9 to 11, low-water plant lovers, and gift shoppers after something memorable.

Who it's not for

Low-light rooms (without strong light the stem stretches and loses its spiral, and that does not grow back), schedule-waterers (overwatering is the top killer), cold-climate outdoor growers in zone 8 or colder, and floor spots within reach of pets or toddlers since the spines are sharp.

Spiral Cactus Care

After arrival. Let it rest in a bright, dry spot for a few days before potting. Hold off on water that first week.

Light. The spiral needs strong light to hold its shape. Give it your sunniest window or full sun outdoors, and move it into direct sun gradually so it does not scorch.

Water. Soak it, then wait. Water deeply only when the soil is bone dry and much less in winter. Never let it sit in water.

Soil and pots. Use a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix with pumice, perlite, or coarse sand, in a pot with a drainage hole.

Temperature. Happiest 60 to 80 F. Keep above 50 F and protect from frost.

FAQ

Is this rooted or a cutting?
Rooted. It arrives as an established plant, ready to pot up.

Will it keep its spiral?
Yes, the spiral holds and tightens with age in strong light. Low light makes it stretch and lose the twist permanently.

How tall will it get?
A mature plant can reach 6 to 13 ft, with more dramatic spirals as it climbs.

Can it handle cold?
Hardy in zones 9 to 11, not frost hardy. Keep it indoors in colder zones.

Is it pet safe?
Non-toxic to cats and dogs. The spines are sharp, so place it up high.

How does it ship?
Bare-root, carefully packed.

Cold Weather Warning

If your area drops below 40°F during the colder months, we highly recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as we don’t automatically include one. This helps keep your plants safe in transit. 🌡️❄️

Cactus Care

After Arrival
Let your plant rest in a bright, dry spot for a few days before potting. Hold off on water that first week so the roots can settle.

Light
The spiral needs strong light to hold its shape. Give it the sunniest window you have, or full sun outdoors. Move it into direct sun gradually over a couple of weeks so it does not scorch.

Water
Soak it, then wait. Water deeply only when the soil has dried out completely, roughly every 2 to 3 weeks in summer and much less in winter. Never let it sit in a saucer of water.

Soil and Pots
Use a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix with plenty of pumice, perlite, or coarse sand. Always pot in a container with a drainage hole. Terracotta is ideal.

Temperature
Happiest from 60 to 80 F. Keep it above 50 F and protect it from frost. Below about 28 F causes damage.

Fertilizer
Feed lightly with a cactus fertilizer once or twice a month spring through fall. Skip winter.

Repotting
Every 1 to 2 years in spring, into a heavy pot so a tall plant does not tip. Wait a week to water after repotting.

Troubleshooting
Mushy or yellow base means overwatering, so back off and check drainage. Thin, pale, stretched growth means not enough light, so move it brighter. Cottony spots in the grooves are mealybugs, so wipe with insecticidal soap.

USDA Zone

9-11 (not frost hardy)

FAQ

Q: Is this a rooted plant or a cutting?

A: Rooted. It arrives as an established plant with a healthy root system, ready to pot up.

Q: Will it keep its spiral as it grows?

A: Yes, the spiral holds and usually tightens with age, as long as it gets strong light. In low light the stem stretches and loses the twist, and that part will not re-spiral.

Q: How tall will it get?

A: In good conditions a mature plant can reach 6 to 13 feet, developing more dramatic spirals as it climbs.

Q: Can it handle cold?

A: It is hardy in zones 9 to 11 and is not frost hardy. In colder zones keep it indoors and bring it in well before frost.

Q: Is it safe around pets?

A: It is non-toxic to cats and dogs. The spines are sharp though, so set it somewhere they cannot bump into it.

Q: How does it ship?

A: Bare-root and carefully packed for safe transit.

Q: How often do I water it?

A: Only when the soil is completely dry, about every 2 to 3 weeks in summer and far less in winter.

Q: Does it flower?

A: Mature plants can produce large, fragrant, white night-blooming flowers. Indoors this can take a few years, so think of blooms as a bonus.
