Description

The Pilosocereus pachycladus commonly known as the Blue Torch Cactus has beautiful blue-green stems. One of its most impressive features is its vivid blue skin which intensifies with full sun exposure. During summer months, this cactus produces large, white night-blooming flowers that attract pollinators. Perfect for beginngers and long time cacti enthusiasts. 

Please note: We offer both cuttings (unrooted pieces that will root over time) and bare-root plants (already rooted, but shipped without soil or pot). Some plants may have minor scars, which are totally normal. Any discoloration at the base especially on rooted plants is from previous healthy growth in soil and is not a sign of damage. Every plant is hand-picked and guaranteed to arrive healthy.

After Arrival
Carefully unpack your cactus as soon as it arrives.

If it’s a cutting, don’t be alarmed if the base looks dry, that’s completely normal. Cuttings are fresh segments taken from mature plants that don’t yet have roots. They need time to callous over, so let them rest in a dry, shaded spot for a few weeks before planting in cactus soil. Avoid watering during this period, as moisture too soon can lead to rot.

If you received a rooted plant, it already has a developed root system and can be potted right away. Once planted, wait about a week before giving it a light watering to help it settle into its new environment.

Sunlight Introduction
Let it acclimate in bright, indirect light for a few days before moving it into direct sun. This helps prevent sunburn and shock.

Light
This cactus thrives in full sun outdoors. Indoors, it’ll need a bright spot with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily to stay upright and vibrant.

Watering
Use the soak-and-dry method. Water thoroughly, then wait until the soil is completely dry before watering again. In winter, reduce watering significantly. This cactus hates soggy roots.

Soil & Pots
Use a fast-draining cactus mix, gritty and lean. Terracotta pots are ideal, and always make sure there’s a drainage hole.

Growth & Repotting
Blue Torch is a faster grower than most columnar cacti and can gain several inches a year. Repot every 1–2 years or when it becomes root-bound. After repotting, wait about a week before watering.

FAQ

Do I need to root the cutting before planting?
Nope! Just let it callous over for 1–2 weeks, then plant in dry soil. Hold off on watering until roots start forming.

How often do I water it?
Only when the soil is completely dry. In summer, every 1–2 weeks. In cooler months, once a month or less.

Can I grow it indoors year-round?
Yes, just make sure it gets lots of sun. A south-facing window is best.

Will it flower?
Mature Blue Torch cacti can bloom with large, night-opening flowers in summer, but it’s rare indoors.

Do I need to fertilize?
You can use a cactus fertilizer at half strength during spring or summer, but it’s not necessary for healthy growth.
