What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact crested Blue Myrtle pictured, 14.5 inches across, shipped rooted and bare root without soil or a pot. After arrival: unbox with thick gloves, the spines are sharp. Let the plant rest in a shaded, dry spot for 2-3 days, then plant in a sandy, fast-draining mix or a gravelly full-sun spot. Wait about a week before the first watering so the roots can settle, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Some scuffing of spines in transit is normal and does not harm the plant.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

This is the exact plant you will receive. A one of a kind crested Myrtillocactus geometrizans, the Blue Myrtle or Blue Candle crest, grown into a full mound 14.5 inches across and 9.5 inches tall. The fans fold over each other like coral, in that chalky powder blue this species is known for.

Honest note: a few stems in the middle have gone back to normal upright growth, the smooth ribbed columns you can see rising out of the crest. That is common in older Myrtillocactus crests and many people like the contrast. If you want a pure crest, you can cut them off at the base later and root them as new plants.

Pictured in its nursery pot for scale. It ships rooted and bare root, wrapped and padded, without soil or the pot.

  • Light: Full sun to bright light, with some afternoon shade in the hottest inland summers

If your area drops below 40°F during the colder months, we highly recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as we don’t automatically include one. This helps keep your plants safe in transit. 🌡️❄️

Cactus Care

Crested Blue Myrtle is easy if you give it sun, sharp drainage and a dry winter. The folds can hold water, so water the soil, not the crest.

  • Light: Full sun to bright light. Strong light keeps the blue color and tight folds. In very hot inland summers, a little afternoon shade prevents sunburn on the crest.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Water deeply at the soil line, then let the mix dry completely before watering again. Nearly dry in winter. Keep water out of the folds.
  • Soil: Sandy, fast-draining cactus mix in a pot with a drainage hole, or a gravelly bed with good drainage.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11. Protect below about 28 F; cover or bring it in on frost nights.
  • Feeding: A diluted cactus fertilizer once or twice in spring and summer is plenty.
