What to expect in the box
You will receive the exact Argentine Saguaro column pictured, freshly dug, shipped rooted and bare root without soil or a pot. Flowers shown will have finished. After arrival: unbox with thick gloves, the spines are sharp. Let the plant rest in a shaded, dry spot for 2-3 days, then plant in a sandy, fast-draining mix or a gravelly full-sun spot. Wait about a week before the first watering so the roots can settle, then begin a normal soak and dry routine. Some scuffing of spines in transit is normal and does not harm the plant.

Cacti can look slightly dull after a few days in a dark box. Color returns within a week or two of bright light. If your area drops below 40F, we recommend adding a heat pack to your order, as one is not automatically included.

This is the exact plant you will receive. A one of a kind Argentine Saguaro (Trichocereus terscheckii, also sold as Echinopsis terscheckii), a single fat column about 32 inches tall and 10 inches across. Thirteen deep ribs, big felted areoles and long tan spines, the classic build of the species. And it is already blooming: when we photographed it there were two white funnel flowers open, each the size of a dinner plate, with more buds coming.

That matters. Argentine Saguaros normally wait until they are several feet tall before they flower. A 32 inch plant with open blooms is an early, vigorous individual, and once a cactus reaches flowering age it does not go back. Expect it to flower every warm season once it settles in at your place (the first season after shipping may be light while it re-roots). The flowers in the photos will be finished by the time it ships; you are buying the plant that grew them.

Grown here in our field in full sun, dug and shipped rooted. This is a heavy plant. Plant it in fast-draining soil, wait a week before the first water, and give it the sunniest spot you have.

Cactus Care

The Argentine Saguaro is the tough one: big, fast for its class, and hardier to cold than the true Saguaro. Full sun and sharp drainage are the whole recipe.

  • Light: Full sun. Six or more hours of direct sun keeps the column thick and brings on the flowers.
  • Water: Soak and dry. Water deeply in the growing season, then let the soil dry completely. Nearly dry from late fall through winter.
  • Soil: Fast-draining cactus mix or a gravelly landscape bed. Never in standing water.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 9 to 11. Established plants tolerate brief drops into the low 20s F when dry; protect young or newly planted ones below freezing.
  • Feeding: A diluted cactus fertilizer once or twice in spring and summer is plenty.
