Description

The Echinocactus grusonii commonly known as the Golden Barrel Cactus is a globe-shaped cactus known for its golden spines and symmetrical form. Native to Mexico, this is a drought-tolerant, low-maintenance cactus. Over time can grow up to 3 feet wide perfect for rock gardens, xeriscaping, and landscapes. During the summer, produces yellow blooms near the crown. 

Please note: We offer both cuttings (unrooted pieces that will root over time) and bare-root plants (already rooted, but shipped without soil or pot). Some plants may have minor scars, which are totally normal. Any discoloration at the base especially on rooted plants is from previous healthy growth in soil and is not a sign of damage. Every plant is hand-picked and guaranteed to arrive healthy.

After Arrival
Carefully unpack your cactus when it arrives. All Golden Barrels are fully rooted, so you can pot them up right away using a well-draining cactus soil mix. Once planted, wait about a week before giving a light watering to let the plant adjust.

Sunlight Introduction
Give it a few days in bright, indirect light before placing it in full sun. This helps prevent sunburn while it acclimates.

Light
Golden Barrels thrive in full sun outdoors. Indoors, place them in the sunniest window you have, ideally with 6+ hours of direct light daily.

Watering
Use the soak-and-dry method. Water deeply, then let the soil dry out completely before watering again. In cooler months, reduce watering to once a month or less. Overwatering is the biggest risk to this plant.

Soil & Pots
Use a gritty, well-draining cactus mix. Terracotta pots are ideal, and drainage holes are a must.

Growth & Repotting
This cactus grows slowly but steadily. It can be repotted every 2–3 years or when the roots outgrow the pot. After repotting, give it a week before watering to help any disturbed roots heal.

How often should I water it?
Only when the soil is completely dry. In summer, every 1–2 weeks; in winter, closer to once a month.

Can I keep it indoors year-round?
Yes! Just make sure it’s getting strong direct sunlight—south- or west-facing windows are ideal.

Will it bloom?
Golden Barrels can produce small yellow flowers in the summer, but typically only after many years and when grown outdoors.

Does it need fertilizer?
A cactus fertilizer at half strength in spring or summer is fine, but not required.
