The trunk is about 4.5 inches tall and 1.3 inches thick, silver gray and armored in straight spines set in threes, topped with a full crown of long glossy green leaves with a pale midrib.

It is not a palm and not a cactus. It is a caudex forming succulent from Madagascar that stores water in that fat trunk, so it shrugs off missed waterings. Honest note: two of the lowest leaves have gone yellow, which is normal seasonal shedding as the plant pushes new leaves from the top. Everything else is clean and firm. Like its relatives it has a milky sap, so wear gloves if a leaf or spine breaks.

Pictured in its nursery pot for scale.
