Fresh out of the fruit they are a deep glossy red, closer to a pomegranate seed than anything you would expect from a cactus, and they deepen toward brown-black as they cure. They come nested in white cactus wool, sometimes called cactus cotton, which is part of the fruit and is yours to keep.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eGolden Barrel is endangered in its native Mexico, mostly because of illegal collection, so every plant raised from nursery seed is one that never gets dug out of the wild.
